2014 had its traditional season opener at Phillip Island, one of the historical venues of both the series and motorcycle racing in general. With the season to get underway, it was time for a first  real on track confrontation, after two days of official testing and the usual photoshoot of the year.

The season opener had it all, from stunning grid girls to motorcycle racing stars like Randy De Puniet – who is making his WorldSBK debut in 2015 – 2003 WSS title winner Chris Vermeulen and the three time champion Troy Bayliss.

The crowd was on its feet already during the first Tissot-Superpole of the year following a great battle between Sylvain Guintoli and the Italian riders Davide Giugliano and Marco Melandri, while Niccolò Canepa was the best qualified in the EVO class.

Race 1 saw Eugene Laverty claiming a historical maiden victory for the Crescent Suzuki Team and a long awaited top step on the podium for the Japanese Manufacturer after a long, long drought. Unfortunately the Irishman was deprived of the double by an engine failure in the second encounter.

Sylvain Guintoli claimed the win in race 2 while, after a thrilling World Supersport race, Frenchman Jules Cluzel gave MV Agusta their first race win. The EVO class best finishes in both races went to David Salom.
